Mercury vapor lamps have mercury in them, which has a clear arc tube, which you can see the electrodes and the starting electrode. The arc tube itself is made out of quarts. Mercury vapor lamps need to be on a mercury vapor ballast/transformer, in ANSI of "H" with the number next to it, like for example: "H39" means 175 watt mercury vapor.

Now Mercury Vapor Fixtures are banned, but not the bulbs, they are for extisting fixtures that are still out there.

Light Color

Clear bulbs have a sky blue color of mercury vapor, for phosored ones light 6500K or lower or higher.


Burnning out[]

Once they burn out, the arc tube will be black, and electrodes wear out, and will not make an arc anymore.
